PHIL BATES SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

2013-2014

The Southern California Section of the Institute of Food Technologists (SCIFTS) will offer scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year.  The awards will provide financial assistance to High School, Undergraduate and Graduate Students who are attending or planning to attend a college or university in the SCIFTS geographical area (Southern California) majoring in Food Science.

$1,000 (minimum) grants will be awarded to qualified students who are attending any college or university and are working toward a degree in food technology, food science/Culinology®, or a related field.  Scholarship awards will be given to graduate and undergraduate students attending both IFT and non-IFT approved programs.

Student Travel Grants Available

For IFT Annual Meeting and Food Expo!

Travel grants are available from SCIFTS to attend the 2013 IFT Annual Meeting and Food Expo in Chicago, Illinois July 13-16, 2013. Grants pay for travel and hotel expenses, up to $500/student. Meals are not reimbursed. Fifteen (15) grants are available to students this year. Grant recipients pay for all applicable expenses up front, and then submit expense reports with a copy of all receipts by July 26, 2013 to the Student Affairs Committee Chair, for submission to the SCIFTS treasurer who will mail the reimbursement checks to the recipients. Applications can be obtained through SCIFTS website or through an e-mail request to committee Chair (see contact information below).

Applications must be received by SCIFTS Student Affairs Committee Chair by April 26, 2013, and must be signed by the department head or major professor to verify status as registered student. The recipients will be notified by May 10, 2013.

DO NOT SEND applications to National IFT

You must be a SCIFTS member to receive a travel grant.

You also must meet the following criteria:

• Volunteer at 2013 SCIFTS Suppliers’ Night Expo or SCIFIC;

• Attend at least one SCIFTS meeting/events in the year (From September 2012 to May 2013)

Priority will be given to students who:

• will serve as a session monitor and/or will give a technical oral or poster session presentation at the Annual Meeting.

• will be competing in IFT student competitions (product development or College Bowl)

• are actively serving on a SCIFTS committee.

• are active in IFT Student Chapter, or Food/Nutrition student organization.

• are officers in student clubs.

• have or will participate in or attend Mountain West or National IFT College Bowl.
